P/A 2008/9 Annual Report

ROTARY ANNS ANNUAL REPORT: 2008/2009

PRESIDENT: Polly RussellSECRETARY: Peggy GreeffTREASURER: Jean ScottFELLOWSHIP: Helen Morgan Membership (active Anns):20Meetings are held the second Wednesday of the month, at 6:30, in the homes of various Anns. _____________________________________________________ At the beginning of this year, the Anns requested that, seeing that we had had such an incredibly active time the previous year, we should “tone it down” a bit this year. Nevertheless, we have had a very successful year, thanks to the co-operation of a wonderful band of ladies. On-going projects continued, a new one was undertaken, and the ladies simply carried on carrying the flag while I was out of action on two rather lengthy occasions when both my husband and I had to undergo open-heart surgery.NEW PROJECT:• In October, it came to our notice that there was a need for ‘tackie bags’ to be made for our new, local Crisis Centre, where people who had been raped (adults and children) were assessed. They needed these to be filled with basic toiletries, as the victims usually had not been allowed to bath or clean themselves up first, and a lot of them came from outlying areas. We sewed 200 of these bags to be handed over to the Rape Crisis Centre. ON-GOING PROJECTS:• SENIORS BIRTHDAYS:This has been ongoing for a good number of years, now. We remember the birthdays of senior citizens in Madeira Home for the aged, and they are visited on the day, complete with a birthday card, as well as a small gift. This is so appreciated by the residents, and especially the Black people, who are not used to be remembered on their birthdays at all, as a rule. • SENIOR TEAS:We hosted 2 Senior’s Teas during the course of the year - one at John Vorster Old Age Home, and the other at Madeira Home. Both were well supported and a great success, with Interacters helping with most enjoyable entertainment. We have been to Komani Hospital provide a meal with dessert and cooldrink on a few occasions. • FOOD HAMPERS:In December we packed approximately 50 food hampers for needy people. Not only did we put in the necessities, but a number of ‘luxuries’ as well. Ieda painted colourful patterns on newsprint for covering the boxes with and Nita Ker-Fox arranged children to make cards to put inside. • FOLLOW THE STAR:As this turned out to be such an enjoyable project, we decided to do it again last year. Chux wrote a poem as clues to various houses that were lit-up with Christmas decorations in the gardens. The clues were mixed up on different forms, so that people would follow different routes. They all ended up back at the Club House, where they got hamburgers, cooldrink and ice cream cones, and also sweets from ‘Father Christmas’. FUND RAISERS:• MORNING MARKET:This was our main fund raiser of the year, held in May, which was a great success. The men helped us by selling hamburgers and boerewors rolls. The winner of the quilting club’s quilt was also drawn at the Morning Market. We raised just on R12 000,00 in total. • CATERING:We catered a few times, mainly for the men, like when they had a Golf day (which co-incided with Lukhanji Sunset hosting a GSE team who joined us for supper), a meal for the induction of new Rotarians and a steak evening. IN HOUSE FELLOWSHIP:• CAKE TIN:This is just a small, in-house, fun, fund-raiser at every monthly meeting. We all contribute R5,00 in order to take part in the lucky draw for the ‘cake tin’, in which there is a gift from the previous winner of the cake tin. • CARE PARTNERS:Instead of ‘Annas’, we had ‘care partners’ this year. Everybody knew who their ‘care partner’ was, and phoned or visited on a fairly regular basis. • GROW-A-FIVERThis was a small in-house fundraiser, where everybody was supposed to use R5,00 and make it ‘grow’ by doing something creative or useful with it. I would like to thank all the Anns who have made this year an enjoyable experience, as well as a successful one. Without your help I would never have been able to do it, especially with all the unexpected operations in our family. I know I have said it before, but I say it again - you are a wonderful band of ladies! POLLY RUSSELL
